By pure PG I mean someone who gets his points and gets his teammates involved, also the best pure point guard leaves his mark on almost every play.
I say it's John Stockton.
Why?
1) To put Stockton's statistical dominance in perspective, there are only four other players in NBA history who have logged more than half of Stockton's career totals in both assists and steals: Magic Johnson, Gary Payton, Isiah Thomas and Jason Kidd. There is no player in league history who has more than 60% of Stockton's career totals in both of these categories
2) Career stats:
19711 points (gets his points)
15806 assists (gets his teamates involved, and thinks a basket is a basket, whether he scores it or a teamate does)
3265 steals (which is 751 more than the man who is second on the all time list, Michael Jordan)
3) Is a 50 greatest all time player.
So my pick is John Stockton. Who do you say is the best pure point guard in NBA history is?
Who is the best PURE Point Guard in NBA history is?nba merchandise
Without question Magic. No comparison. First, Stockton didn't even win jack. Second, were it not for Magic contracting HIV before what was at the time the biggest NBA contract, he would have had several more years to pad his all time numbers for sure. This guy (magic) almost averaged a friggin triple double in the modern era ok:
RPG APG PPG
7.20 11.2 19.5
John Stockton averaged a career double-double, with 13.1 points and 10.5 assists per game. but not even close to magic's numbers bro.
sure stockton has the all time assist record but he played for a few additional years. And it was mostly easy pick and roll passes to karl malone, another all time under achiever with no rings. nothing flashy is right.
And don't pad up your boy's steal numbers versus MJ either, he would not have that either if jordan didn't take a 2 year hiatus in his prime and keep cutting his career short when he was kicking your boy and his buddy malone's *** in the finals.
By your own methodology, Magic is better bc he SCORED a LOT More and had a higher all time career assist average ("someone who gets his points and gets his teammates involved")!!! 5 Rings, come on!
EDIT to the one underneath me: please 'kING' we're talking 1 championship pre-modern old school era. keep the big o to yourself. big numbers little rings. not even close!
btw, 'big o' was the best point guard ever, look at his stats but then 'jordan sucks.' did you forget to look at MJ's numbers? lot of his records are for playoff and finals play, something the little o did not see a whole lot of.
you're clearly full of it
Who is the best PURE Point Guard in NBA history is?2003 nba draft ,nba teams
Ive been preeching it sense the first day i saw him play. He will never have his incredible assists record broken, and he will never have his almost equally amazing steals record. This guy is my basketball idol. He isnt a cockey jerk, he doesnt brag on and on, and i never saw him grabbing his jersey to show the logo, even when he made amazing shots to kill other teams. second best player of his time(gotta give MJ credit) and on easy pick for the greatest pure point guard of all time. Not that it even matters, but he sure knew how to rock the short shorts to haha.
It's Magic. He would've played longer if not for his illness, and he would have put his records out of reach so that Stock and Mark Jackson couldn't have surpassed his steal and assist numbers. Also, Magic was more of a scorer while keeping his guys involved. Magic averaged about 19 pts a game for his career. And if Stock was so dominating, how come he never was even in the conversation for MVP? He was great, but he's the #2 all-time PG.
The answer to this has got to be Magic Johnson. He played half the career of stockton, and if he would not have gotten the HIV virus he would have beaten some of stocktons records. Not to mention, magic doesn't have naked fingers....
I would agree with you. The guy just never had the flashiness of the other point guards.
But if I were starting a team it would be hard to pass on Magic Johnson, a 6foot 9in point guard.
Magic! His hardware speaks for himself!
5 Titles
3 Final MVPs
Etc.
You Know?
John Stockton? What are you, a MORON?
The Big 'O' ....Oscar Robertson was the best point guard ever. The stats speak for themselves.

i dont know, why are you asking me?
Given that you said pure PG, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was thinking Stockton before I even opened the page.
As you already stated, he holds both of the big PG records - assists and steals.
Furthermore, he was a solid [not great] shooter with good accuracy [something like 15 ppg and 0.500] - to me both of these stats go along with my profile of a "pure PG": reliable scorer but would rather feed the ball to a more able player - in this case, Karl Malone.
Keep in mind, Stockton and Karl Malone are also IMO the greatest duo in NBA history. Neither one of them would have been anywhere near as good without the other. There's a reason they both left the Jazz at about the same time.
Seems like a pure PG to me.
EDIT: Magic Johnson would not have broken Stockton's records. Even with his longer career, Stockton still averaged about 50 more assists 50 more steals per season than Johnson [and I stopped Johnson's career at 1992 but used his career totals].
john stockton. he's the league leader in assists and steals, which means he's effective at running the point and is also a good defender. he's not a flashy-type of point guard but certainly gets the job done. he's also a clutch player. i remember him draining that 3 point shot against the rockets, that eventually sent them into the NBA finals. the only thing that he lacked in his career is was a championship crown. but even without he, he still is one of the top point guards in the NBA. maybe if he had won at least 1, then we can really say that he's the number 1 point guard in NBA history.
wat about jason kidd
